This week the DCM Institute headed to our nation’s capital for their first Professional Development Day of 2026. The day of practical insight, honest conversations, and shared experiences brought together Village Professionals from across the ACT and surrounding regions.
Hosted by the wonderful team at Goodwin Retirement Village Monash, the day focused on one of the biggest challenges currently facing the sector – supporting an ageing resident cohort while continuing to deliver dignity, independence, and quality of life for residents.
What stood out most throughout the day, however, was just how personal many of the conversations became.
While discussions began around operational challenges and resident support, they quickly evolved into broader conversations about empathy, communication, and the role Village Professionals play in supporting both residents and families through difficult transitions.
A number of attendees openly shared their own personal experiences caring for parents, partners, and loved ones. At times the conversations were emotional. It was a powerful reminder that lived experience often shapes how we connect with families navigating conversations around care, support, and what is ultimately best for someone they love.
Those shared stories created a genuine sense of connection in the room and highlighted the compassion that exists across the retirement living sector.
We were also pleased to once again welcome Jonathan Chow, Special Counsel at MinterEllison (pictured above left, with Village Manager John Mazurkiewicz), who provided a timely update on key considerations Village Professionals should be across when managing the entry and exit of residents within retirement villages.
Jonathan’s session was a valuable reminder of the importance of staying informed as resident expectations, legislation, and operational responsibilities continue to evolve.
A very special thank you must also go to the team at Goodwin Retirement Village Monash for hosting the day. Their hospitality was exceptional and helped create such a warm, welcoming, and professional environment for everyone attending.
To round out the event, Village Manager John generously hosted attendees on a behind-the-scenes tour of the village, offering valuable insight into the operations, facilities, and resident experience at Goodwin Monash. It was the perfect way to conclude a day centred on collaboration, learning, and supporting best practice in community living.
The next series of Professional Development Days commences in July and will run through August. For more information click below .
