Welcome to 2025.
Hopefully you’ve found some time over the break to reflect on the opportunity a new year brings to redefine your goals, embrace growth and professional development, and elevate your career in the seniors living sector.
As professionals, we know that our residents’ needs and expectations are constantly evolving, and to meet those demands, we must stay informed, proactive, and committed to lifelong learning.
This is why continuous professional development is no longer an option — it’s a necessity.
Our 2025 Calendar was released late last year, and offers some great ways for you to plan how you will invest in your professional skills over the course of the year. But there’s a secret ingredient to truly unlocking your potential: embracing a growth mindset.
What is a growth mindset and why does it matter?
A growth mindset thrives on challenges and sees setbacks as stepping stones to success. With a growth mindset, you can transform the way you approach learning and development. It enables you to:
- Take on new challenges: Whether implementing a new resident program or restructuring team workflows, you’ll approach obstacles with confidence and creativity.
- Acquire new skills: From mastering advanced financial tools to refining conflict resolution techniques, you’ll tackle skill-building with enthusiasm.
- Pursue lifelong learning: Those who don’t move, don’t move. Stagnation isn’t an option in a dynamic field like retirement living management. A growth mindset helps you see learning as a continuous, rewarding journey.
By cultivating this mindset, you create a solid foundation for professional success.
Strategies for combining a growth mindset with professional development
Identify development goals
Start by reflecting on areas for improvement:
- Technical knowledge: Deepen your understanding of financial reports, operational efficiency, or community management software.
- Leadership and communication: Develop skills to effectively manage teams, resolve conflicts, and inspire those around you.
Identifying these goals gives you a clear roadmap for your professional growth journey.
Take advantage of learning resources
Professional development opportunities abound:
- DCM Institute Professional Development Days: Stay ahead of trends and build connections with peers. Our next Professional Development days are in February and March where we will explore Expectation Management. Click here to register.
- DCM Institute Knowledge Centre topics and Masterclasses: Monthly topics based on industry needs and quarterly Masterclasses with subject matter experts. You can download our 2025 calendar here.
- Peer-to-peer learning: Engage in group discussions or local networking events to share insights and strategies.
- Lunch & Learn Series: In 2025 we are introducing a new series of webinars which will cater to each state, twice a year. Keep an eye out and register to attend. We will have professionals and advocates from the sector joining us, to provide insights and guidance around key trends and developments.
Expand your learning beyond formal sessions by exploring podcasts, webinars, or developmental books
Create a learning habit
Embed professional development into your routine with simple steps:
- Dedicate a small amount of time each week to reading industry updates or completing online topics. It doesn’t need to be the same thing each week. One week can be reading industry news, the next can be completing a topic in the Knowledge Centre. Small regular consistent learning blocks can be more achievable than one off large learning binges.
- Set quarterly goals for completing specific learning topics or attending in person or virtual sessions. Write these goals down where you can see them everyday to help the momentum of achieving them and e DCM Institute’s Professional Development Point system to keep track of your progress.
It takes 66 days for a behaviour to become automatic.
Seek mentorship and collaboration
Collaborate with peers or seek advice from experienced leaders:
- Mentors: Seek guidance from experienced leaders who can offer tailored advice and share their wisdom.
- Peers: Engage with colleagues in your team or across the sector. Regular collaboration fosters shared learning and sparks innovative solutions.
Regular collaboration with peers fosters shared learning and innovative solutions. These regular collaborations can be done with your team members or with other sector professionals in your geographical location. The DCM Institute Professional Development Days allows for you to broaden your network as well.
A real-life example of growth in action
Imagine a retirement village manager, Claire, who struggled with conflict resolution. By embracing a growth mindset, she identified this as a key area for improvement and enrolled in a masterclass on effective communication. Over time, Claire implemented her new skills, transforming tense situations into collaborative solutions and strengthening trust among residents and staff.
Her success illustrates how professional development and a growth mindset can elevate your career and positively impact your workplace.
Call to action
This year, make professional development a cornerstone of your personal and career growth. Start with these steps:
- Identify one skill or area you want to develop.
- Commit to a learning resource or activity this month—whether it’s a webinar, course, or mentorship session.
- Share your goals with a colleague or mentor for accountability.
As the saying goes, “The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” Let this be the year you choose to grow—not just for yourself, but for the residents and teams you serve.
