Judy Mayfield steps back after 12 years representing village residents
One of retirement living’s most familiar and respected resident advocates is stepping back.
After 12 years across two terms as President of the Association of Residents of Queensland Retirement Villages (ARQRV), Judy Mayfield has retired from the role.
Judy, who celebrated her 80th birthday on Saturday with family, will remain with ARQRV for the next 12 months as Immediate Past President. She will mentor and assist the new committee, led by incoming President Vee Bergman.
Her first seven-year term ended in 2021. Judy returned as Acting President when her successor resigned and was elected to the position again in 2022.
Across both terms, she helped build ARQRV from a small volunteer organisation into a recognised voice with government, industry bodies and retirement village operators.
Village professionals know Judy for her direct approach and her willingness to say what residents are thinking. She has consistently encouraged operators to consider how resident expectations are changing, particularly as people enter villages later and require greater levels of care and support as they age.
She returned to that subject in her farewell message to the sector.
“You had better get your models right over the next few years as I will be expecting you to offer me the care and services I need as I age,” she said.
It is a message carrying particular weight from someone who has spent more than a decade listening to residents and representing their interests.
Judy will join the DCM Institute team at VILLAGE SUMMIT in November, bringing that resident perspective directly into the room with village professionals and sector leaders.
Her retirement from the presidency closes an important chapter for ARQRV. Her contribution to the conversation about ageing, care and the future of retirement living will continue.
