Leadership – More than just management

As we step into a new year, we predict leadership in the retirement village sector will once again be called upon.
Last year’s challenges reminded us how essential it is to stay resilient and keep a finger on the pulse of our communities. Negative media coverage tested the industry, and while many communities emerged “relatively unscathed,” is that really enough?
The expectations of today’s residents are anything but static. They’re not just looking for a place to live; they want vibrant communities, meaningful engagement, and experiences that enhance their lives.
This raises an important question: Are we doing enough to evolve as leaders? Staying the same, “that’s the way we’ve always done it”, won’t cut it anymore. Residents’ needs are shifting rapidly, and so must we. The moment we stop asking ourselves how we can do better is the moment we risk falling behind.
Leadership in this sector has always required a solid understanding of operations—managing budgets, ensuring compliance, and keeping day-to-day functions running smoothly. But in 2025, that’s just the baseline.
Vibrant communities don’t happen by accident. They’re built intentionally, providing a safe living environment with proactive programs to foster connection and belonging. Reasons why potential residents choose your village over others in the area.
Leading Beyond Your Village
We’d all agree, the stronger the industry, the better the outcomes for everyone.
True leadership isn’t about just managing your Village effectively—it’s about setting the standard.
At the end of last year, The Weekly Source reported that less than 40% of retirement villages are subscribers to its Code of Conduct launched six years ago. The result – individual state governments introducing their own Codes of Conduct or Rules of Practice for operators to comply with.
If more operators don’t sign up, this trend will continue.
As you settle into the new year, ask yourself this: What can you do to lead the way within your village, and move the needle for an entire sector?
