Legislative reform remains high on the agenda in every state and territory, with governments continuing to review and reshape retirement village legislation. As the sector looks to strong advocacy and leadership during this time of change, so too do retirement village residents — through their state-based associations, which play a vital role in representing resident voices and influencing reform outcomes.
Over the past fortnight, there’s been important leadership movement across three of these associations. In Queensland and Western Australia, experienced presidents have been re-elected, while in New South Wales, a new president steps up as part of a planned transition.
New leadership in New South Wales
Roger Pallant has been appointed President of the Retirement Village Residents Association (RVRA), following its AGM on 25 September. Roger, who previously served as Vice President, succeeds Craig Bennett, who led the association since 2021. Craig will remain active as Immediate Past President, offering continuity and guidance.
Roger has been a key figure in the RVRA’s advocacy efforts, particularly through the Ageing Without Fear survey, conducted in 2023 across 120 villages and 1,259 residents. He was instrumental in presenting the findings to stakeholders, which led to a joint Statement of Respect between the RVRA, the NSW Ageing & Disability Commission, and the Retirement Living Council (Property Council of Australia).
Stability and growth in Queensland
In Queensland, Judy Mayfield has been re-elected as President of the Association of Residents of Qld Retirement Villages (ARQRV), continuing in a leadership role she has held for 11 years. With a background in community services and supported accommodation, Judy says the association is well positioned for the year ahead, with four new committee members and stronger operational support.
Executive Director Jodie Gorrell has moved into a four-day-per-week role to help expand the association’s capacity.
“The actual committee will continue to be made up of people who live in a retirement village but Jodie’s position will ensure the on-going sustainability of the association,” Judy said.
“I am feeling excited about the coming year and more confident about the role of ARQRV in the future.”
Continued leadership in Western Australia
In Western Australia, Hank de Smit has been re-elected as President of Village Retirement WA at the association’s AGM in August. Hank continues to provide consistent leadership at a time when legislative reform also remains firmly on the table in WA.
With over 20 years of experience in the seniors living sector, James has led operations for both large and small operators. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to a resident-focused approach, working tirelessly to establish, improve, and transform retirement communities for some of Australia's top owners and operators.
James holds a Masters Degree in Commerce and Economics (UNSW) with an advanced specialisation in Human Resource Management. A former member of the NSW Retirement Living Council, he continues to sit on numerous sector Committees.
