This year, Mother’s Day feels a little different

Mother’s Day carries both personal and professional meaning.
As a mum, I think of the quiet moments of love and connection shared with my own children — the laughter, the lessons, the growing up that feels both slow and far too fast. As a daughter, I find myself reflecting more deeply on the role my own mum has played in shaping the woman I’ve become, and the values I try to live by every day.
Yet this year, Mother’s Day feels a little different. Perhaps more layered, more considered.
As someone who works closely with Village Professionals across the retirement living sector, I’ve witnessed the extraordinary care and compassion shown every day to mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers — women whose lives have been full, complex, and rich with stories that still need to be heard.
Supporting those who care for others — especially in the later chapters of life — has added a new dimension to how I view this day.
I’m reminded that Mother’s Day isn’t just about flowers and cards; it’s about presence, empathy, and honouring all the roles women have played across generations — as caregivers, trailblazers, nurturers, decision-makers, and mentors.
It’s also about recognising that for many residents in retirement communities, Mother’s Day can stir a range of emotions — joy, gratitude, longing, or loss. For the Village teams who walk alongside them, this day brings an opportunity to offer something more than celebration — it offers connection.
In 2025, Mother’s Day is Sunday 11 May. Across the country there will be Village Professionals organising events, lending a hand to support residents who are missing families, or an ear to simply listen. It is a day that highlights how your role is more powerful than you may realise. You’re helping create meaningful experiences and tender moments of remembrance and joy.
As a mum and a daughter, I’ll be taking a moment to hold those I love a little closer. As someone who supports those working in retirement living, I’ll be pausing to appreciate the heart-led work you do — not just on special days, but every day. Thank you for all that you bring to your communities, especially on days like this.
Enjoy Mother’s Day, with your residents and your own family.
