This day was drawn to our attention earlier in the week – Dying to Know Day.
Held yesterday, 8 August, Dying to Know Day aims to break down the stigma and discomfort surrounding hard conversations about death, dying, and grief.
Research from ‘Dying to Know’ and The Groundswell Project Australia reveals that while nearly 90% of Australians recognise the importance of end-of-life planning, only about one-third have taken concrete steps.
Moreover, 40% believe their loved ones would find comfort in knowing their wishes. Your role in breaking down the stigma surrounding death and dying can help bridge this gap.
This national initiative, led by Proveda, this year focused on personalising final arrangements and building community.
Why Our Role Matters?
As a Village Professional, we can play a role in shaping culture around end-of-life planning.
Jessie Williams, community programs manager at Proveda, said leaning on one’s community can really help individuals overcome the challenges that end of life planning can present.
“While most Australians recognise the importance of planning for end-of-life, many individuals and communities still face barriers when it comes to understanding what this means, taking action or starting the hard conversation around death and dying,” she said.
“This often leads to end of life experiences being misaligned with an individual’s values, preferences or wishes, because they simply don’t know what is available or what they can request or expect.
“Building communities that can foster these types of conversations is a critical step in ensuring all Australians have access to the tools and environment they need to plan for end of life.
Creating a Supportive Environment
Your retirement village can become a beacon for fostering these crucial discussions.
We have the ability to organise seminars on end-of-life planning. Invite professionals such as legal advisors, palliative care specialists, and death doulas to provide valuable insights and answer questions.
We also have the ability to make information about essential legal directives readily available. This includes details on Advanced Care Directives, Superannuation binding death nomination forms, Enduring Guardianship, Enduring Power of Attorney, Wills, and Funeral Preferences.
For further guidance, Proveda provides a comprehensive Final Checklist for end-of-life planning. Access it here to help support your community in this important area.
