Five For Friday: We sit down with Bolton Clarke’s Callisto Place Senior Manager, Guy Marinucci

What did you do before becoming a Village Manager?

I was a Hotel General Manager and had worked in the hotel industry since the late eighties.

What made you decide to become a VM?

Post-Covid hotels were in a difficult place and the hotel where I worked was sold and converted into luxury apartments. I looked around for a similar role and I always thought a retirement village would be a rewarding industry to join.

What do you think is the most important asset a VM should have?

I think the most important asset is being a good listener and having a sense of curiosity.

Can you describe the best day you had as a VM or the most memorable experience?

It’s always rewarding seeing residents move into their new home and becoming settled in their new environment. You know when they have truly embraced their new home when they are guiding new residents into the Village.

What five tips would you give anyone thinking of being a VM?

• Do it.
• Embrace learning about the residents.
• Appreciate the opportunity to help people move into the next phase of their lives.
• Prepare to form relationships with the residents which will be beneficial for both parties.
• Go in with a sense of curiosity and learn about the lives they have lived before.
