More than one way to learn: the power of blended learning

Just like there is more than one way to skin a cat, so the saying goes, so too is there more than one way to expand your knowledge, and develop your professionalism.
In previous editions of Friday, I’ve shared insights on making the most of professional development opportunities as they arise. In saying that, I haven’t yet explored why the DCM Institute offers a variety of learning formats for professionals in the retirement sector—and how this diverse approach enhances learning outcomes.
A combination of learning formats creates a richer, more engaging experience. It allows managers to absorb information at their own pace, revisit key concepts in different ways, and apply learning in real-world scenarios.
At DCM Institute, we offer:
- Articles – Quick, insightful reads on key industry topics.
- Monthly topics – Interactive, self-paced modules to deepen understanding.
- Quarterly Masterclasses – In-depth sessions with industry experts.
- Professional Development Days – Hands-on learning and networking opportunities.
- Newly created Monthly state-based Lunch & Learn sessions – Short, focused sessions on relevant state issues.

These different formats can be combined to create a blended learning approach, where online learning is reinforced with in-person experiences.
For example, as we continue our Professional Development Day tour, you can complement your experience by reviewing related online topics beforehand or revisiting them afterward for a deeper dive. This combination strengthens retention and application of key concepts.
The Importance of Reinforcement
Learning isn’t a one-time event—it requires reinforcement to be effective. Reading an article may introduce a concept. Engaging in a monthly topic allows for deeper exploration. Attending a Masterclass or networking event provides an opportunity to discuss and apply learning in real-world scenarios. By engaging with a topic in multiple ways, you are more likely to retain and apply this knowledge.
We all juggle very diverse responsibilities, while being time poor when it comes to bettering ourselves. The blended learning approach we enable allows you to integrate professional development into your schedules seamlessly.
- Short-form learning (e.g., Articles, Lunch & Learn sessions): Quick insights without a major time commitment.
- On-demand learning (e.g., monthly topics): Engage at your own pace, pausing and resuming as needed.
- Live learning (e.g., Masterclass, Professional Development Days): Real-time interaction with peers and experts.
A blended learning approach provides the flexibility, depth, and engagement needed for effective professional development. By taking advantage of multiple formats, managers can reinforce learning, enhance retention, and apply new knowledge confidently in their roles.
