For more than twenty years, the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index has tracked how Australians feel about their lives.
It measures wellbeing through the essentials: relationships, health, safety, community connection, purpose, and financial security. Because it captures both the emotional and practical realities of everyday life, the Index has become one of the country’s most trusted indicators of how people are really doing.
Australian Unity presented their latest findings across the country as part of DCM Institute’s VILLAGE SUMMMIT event series, sharing insights to village professionals, operators, and sector leaders across the country.
One of the most promising shifts emerging from these conversations is the growing interest from operators who want to integrate the Wellbeing Index into their existing resident satisfaction surveys. Over the course of VILLAGE SUMMIT we uncovered a few who are already doing this, and the feedback is strong.
The Index gives operators a deeper, more human view of life inside their communities. It helps them move beyond satisfaction to genuine wellbeing. And there is room for many more organisations to take this step.
The findings from this year’s report reinforce what the VILLAGE SUMMIT theme, Wellbeing Done Well, is all about.
Wellbeing Done Well is practical. It is measurable. And we already know what works.
- Supportive environments lift wellbeing.
Places that nurture belonging perform better on almost every wellbeing measure. Residents who feel known and supported report higher life satisfaction. - Security underpins everything.
Financial stress remains one of the most powerful wellbeing disruptors. Doing wellbeing well means creating stability and confidence for residents, especially as the cost of living rises. - Purpose strengthens people.
A sense of achievement and meaning is closely linked to overall wellbeing. Operators that create ways for residents to contribute see stronger community outcomes. - Connection wins.
Relationships continue to be the strongest predictor of high wellbeing. Any wellbeing strategy needs to put human connection front and centre.
The Australian Unity Wellbeing Index gives the sector a roadmap
The more operators use it alongside their own surveys, the more sharply they can understand and respond to the real needs of residents, today and into tomorrow.
Wellbeing Done Well starts with evidence, and it grows through action. The Index shows where to focus. The Summit is where the sector turns that insight into better communities.
