Garden Village Port Macquarie, in the NSW Mid North Coast, will host a vibrant creative ageing and intergenerational celebration in March 2026 as part of the NSW Seniors Festival themed ‘Live Life in Colour.’
The program partners with Arts Mid North Coast, Hello Koalas, Intergen Connect and Heritage Christian School to build intergenerational connections through art and enhance wellbeing.
Garden Village received a $5,000 NSW Seniors Festival grant from the Department of Communities and Justice in recognition of its commitment to excellence in community engagement.
Minister for Women and Seniors Jodie Harrison announced the successful grants last month.
Garden Village is proud to collaborate with award-winning local organisations to bring a series of colourful projects to life. The program, Paint and Connect: Koalas, Van Gogh and Virtual Adventures, will bring seniors and students together to nurture creativity, connection and fun.
Residents will be invited to take part in several creative ageing experiences, including:
- Co-creating a giant mural featuring a butterfly, symbolising transformation, memories and renewal. The artwork will honour past residents and celebrate the Village’s long-standing commitment to ageing in place.
- A paint-your-own mini koala workshop, supported by the arrival of the full-sized Hello Koala sculpture Flying Fife.
- A Virtual Reality exploration of the colourful world of Vincent van Gogh, including Sunflowers and The Bedroom.
The program will conclude with a Live Life in Colour social celebration for village residents.
Cheryl Pearson (pictured above with artist Brad Collins), President of the Garden Village Auxiliary said: “This is a wonderful opportunity. It’s fantastic to bring the butterfly to life in such a creative way and beautify the space. We look forward to engaging a young local artist and inviting a local school to take part in this exciting outdoor project.”
Skye Petho, Arts Mid North Coast Program Manager said “One project we’re excited to support is a new interactive mural at Garden Village. Local artist Brad Collins will bring this vibrant artwork to life with village residents. We can’t wait to see this mural come to life.”
Margret Meagher, Project Director of the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail, said Hello Koala Flying Fife will be on display at Garden Village for the Seniors Festival, and congratulated Garden Village on their innovation.
Jo McNamara Community Engagement Manager Garden Village said “The initiative promotes creative ageing, reduces isolation and strengthens intergenerational bonds. It supports seniors’ wellbeing through art and shared storytelling. We look forward to sharing the mural on social media in 2026.” Garden Village is a Regional Winner and State Finalist for Outstanding Community Organisation of the Year with Business NSW.
